The Mary Faith O’Neill Memorial Scholarship

The Mary Faith O’Neill Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: (Amount Equal to One Annual Tuition Award) The Mary Faith O’Neill Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an Education major in his/her junior or senior year who demonstrates a desire to teach at a Worcester public elementary school. Applicants should provide a short essay attesting to the need for this grant and their interest in becoming an elementary education teacher.

The Mary Faith O’Neill Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. David and Mrs. Elizabeth Quist in memory of their longtime friend Mary Faith O’Neill, a former teacher at Chandler Junior High School, now Chandler Magnet School, in Worcester.

David Quist and O’Neill began their teaching careers at Chandler in the mid-1960s when it was a junior high school. O’Neill remained a teacher there until the school closed. Quist went on to join the faculty at Worcester State University and become chair of the Education Department.

Through this scholarship, the Quists have established a lasting tribute to one of Worcester’s dedicated public school teachers. O’Neill spent her career at an elementary school with a long relationship with the WSU Education Department through its student-teacher placement program.
