Born in Worcester, Albro attended Leicester High School, where he began dating his wife of 55 years, Lillian C. (Brooks) Albro, in their junior year. He and Lillian both attended Worcester State, earning bachelor’s degrees in 1965. He went on to have a long and successful career as an educator, teaching English for 37 years and retiring as assistant principal of Leicester High School in 2002.

A talented athlete and a beloved coach. George was a play-making point guard who completed a record number of assists at Worcester State, where he led the ’61-62 team to a state championship. He coached Boys Basketball and Baseball at Leicester High over a span of 17 years and later served as Assistant and then Head Basketball Coach at Worcester State, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998. An avid golfer, he played in the Senior League at Bedrock CC in Rutland.

Dedicated to a life of service and philanthropy, George and Lillian were steadfast supporters of their alma mater through many decades of the University’s growth. A trusted leader to whom many looked to for his wisdom, George served on the Alumni Association Advisory Board, the Worcester State Foundation Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees, where he was the chairman. George and Lillian never missed alumni or sporting events and were often seen walking the grounds of campus together on any given morning throughout the year. He was awarded a Distinguished Alumni Award for Outstanding Service to Alma Mater in 1997.

He and Lillian were consistently among the first to donate their time and treasure to help students reach their goals and made a point of staying in touch with many after graduation. They gave generously to support student scholarships, emergency funding and retention efforts.

The entire Worcester State community benefited from his service, kindness and support, and he is missed by many.
