The Samantha Jill Cote Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Samantha Jill Cote’s life was tragically cut short when she was involved in a car accident on May 29, 2011. Having recently completed her freshman year at Worcester State University, she was anxiously waiting to see if she would be accepted into the Nursing program in the fall.
A graduate of Blackstone Millville Regional High School and lifelong resident of Blackstone, Mass., Samantha had a wide range of interests, always wanting to try something new. Growing up, experimenting with dance, gymnastics, piano and Girl Scouts, she found herself with a large circle of friends. Drawing and art, as well as academics, seemed to come natural to her, and she was very modest about any of her talents and accomplishments. She loved taking photos and creating videos that captured her love of life and spontaneous attitude. Despite her carefree spirit, Samantha was very committed to her part-time job, often working on weekends and holidays, and was a devoted student determined to get into the Nursing program at Worcester State.
Anyone who knew Samantha knew that if she wanted to do something, she would find a way. Being told she couldn’t, wouldn’t or shouldn’t was not an option. In a paper she wrote in 2011 at Worcester State she mentioned, “Some fears are worth taking the risk, meaning they can make you happier if you face them.” Samantha was not afraid to face her fears and follow her dreams.
Samantha’s family and friends are forever grateful that she graced their lives for 18 years. She will forever be loved and missed by those who knew her. This scholarship was created by her parents, Jennifer and Neal Cote, and sister Danielle, in hopes of assisting other Worcester State University students who share Samantha’s love of life, determination and free spirit. It is a fitting tribute to a remarkable young woman who will not be forgotten.
